I'll See You Further Down the Road

A Medicine Story of Trust...

“Stories are best received when an open ear, and heart request them. This is the calling for creation, for a deep listening, for stepping into our roles as storytellers. You might call Leah’s School for Sacred Storytelling ‘divine intervention' as she brings together mentors, tellers and other seekers just at the right time. A time in your life that brought you here, that brought us all here… when its time to live into our stories.” — Mark

Medicine Stories with Leah happened to start just as I found out one of my brothers, David, had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The six week session ended with a medicine story festival lasting three hours with each who wanted to share having five minutes for their story, then three listeners would reflect back and Leah would close moving onto the next storyteller.

I happened to be driving back to Oregon from southern California on this day of tellings. Leaving Los Angeles heading north, it was to be the last time sitting with my brother. He had been at a clinic south of the border for treatment and upon completion he came up to our father’s home in LA to spend time with the family in the area. He grew up there as a teen with our youngest brother and eventually our sister was born creating a new instant family for my dad and his second wife, our significant other mother. I had the choice to stay with my mother, the brother’s mother of the same womb.

As I listened to all of the stories and feedback while driving I had the feeling it best not to engage in a telling. I had been so distracted during the six weeks since finding out about Dave and the challenges of such a cancer. I had not really done the practices, the writing, and being really present with a medicine story.

Yet my muse was getting flustered with me wondering why I would not take this opportunity, this incredibly synchronous potentiality to muster what might be just the right medicine story to emerge. So there I was driving up through central California through the stink of cows, wondering if I would make it to the next truck stop some forty miles away before the session ended. I did and thankfully was able to get out of the car, slow down and listen deeply to what wanted to come through.

There I was being asked if I was to do a telling, the last of the festival…the caboose. So I let loose.

Now I share this with you a few weeks after this telling, today on the day David has chosen to release himself from the suffering he and our family are experiencing. He is back home in Canada where he will be assisted in his transition with his family at his side.

I honor this and told him so whispering this message gently in his ear…

“Being the one and only person left on this planet who was there when you entered this world while journeying far and wide over the years together with nothing but unconditional love towards you my brother Dave, every single day and now beyond.

For now it’s not goodby, — I’ll see you further down the road — I trust.
