It didn’t take a second thought of wanting to participate in the Sisters Festival of Book StorySLAM. Although I have to admit I did wait until the last minute to press the submit button on the sign up form.
I wanted to sense what might come through the story if I did it. Also wanted to push myself to get out on stage vs always being behind the curtain.
As the Belfry filled up, I did too. I could sense Joe being here playing his bass and singing. This was the heart of his community here in Sisters over the years.
When we synchronistically reconnected back in 2018 we hadn’t seen each other in years. We first met 1979 when I knew of him always wanting to fulfill his dream of living in a geodesic dome. And I knew of his move to Sisters to realize his dream in the 1990s.
Long story short, in 2020 we took on Joe’s dome which we call dHome. A crazy set of circumstances all lining up offered us the opportunity to say yes, yes to a major change in life.
Fortunately we had time with Joe before he passed. His illness led him to selling his property. Three months later the new owners put it back on the market. We drove north to Oregon the next morning after finding out it was listed and put in an offer.
Thanks to Joe, arriving here has slowed us to the pace of nature. Awakening to the seasons. And to the sense of storycatching.
This was what I was feeling as the StorySLAM approached with the theme, “under the surface.”
Exploring the sense of mythelium, the underlying stories threaded through our lives that weave us together.
Mythelium: storyseeds longing to be remembered
story catchers we be
start with a storyseed
nurture it into a sense of place
witness it germinate
threading its roots into the mythelium
stories long lost buried in time
yet longing to be remembered
Feeling the need to weave Joe into the mythelium of now, since the original eleprocon storyseeds were encouraged by him in 1980.
Back then Joe would give me the keys to the Long Beach Museum of Art Video Annex to create during the night. Now more recently herein lies his desire to storycatch his notions of “Aging to Saging” we recorded together during his last months.
That’s the kinda guy Joe Leonardi was. Joe was a, “divine and concur” kinda guy.
