As the story goes we never thought about moving to Oregon until we found out Joe’s property was being sold again. Joe was now living in Bend between his daughters places until his health was failing and he needed to move into assisted living.
Since I was now living up in Sisters, Joe called and asked if I would help him catch one last story. He wanted to explore his sense of ‘aging to saging’ and take the opportunity to involve the elders who he was now living with. So we did that November 2021.
Joe Leonardi passed away September 20, 2022. His journey expressed a sense of courage I have learned much from. We hosted his last meal at the dome with his family and then again once he passed we gathered friends and family to catch some stories. Joe now rests at the foot of the elder tree in the meadow.
Unfortunately we were not here when his memorial service was held at the Belfry in Sisters where he was on stage many a times rockin’ it. Missing witnessing his community honoring Joe moved me deeply. Its what’s beneath the surface of stepping on stage at the Belfry for the Sisters 2025 Book Fair StorySLAM… to honor Joe.
